Animal Facts:
  1. Class: Actinopterygii
    Family: Scombridae
  2. there are several species: Atlantic, Pacific, and southern. They migrate across all oceans but are now extinct in the Black Sea.
  3. the total estimated population of all species is 1.6 million but only 145,000 are reproducing adults and with overfishing decimating the population this seemingly large number shouldn’t be taken lightly.
  4. Atlantic bluefin are the most endangered, but I couldn’t find specific numbers for them. However, the population of Pacific bluefin was only 2.6% of the size it used to be (% calculated in 2017) meaning the percentage for the Atlantic is even smaller. In fact, populations numbers decreased up to just over 80% between 1979-2009, and by 2013 numbers had dropped 96%
  5. Atlantic bluefin are listed by the IUCN as Endangered; Pacific bluefin are at historical lowest levels, and Southern bluefin are listed as Critically Endangered
  6. threats include: overfishing, illegal fishing, bycatch, and plastic, with overfishing being the most significant reason
