The porpoise genus Phocoena comprises four species; Vaquita are believed to be most closely related to Burmeister’s Porpoise.
with restricted habitat, they are found only in the Sea of Cortez in shallow, murky lagoons along the coastline.
Considered the most endangered of 129 extant marine mammal species, there’s an estimate of between 6-22 individuals left (according to a count in Aug 2018) Population is at a (roughly) 39% yearly decrease: there was around 30 in 2016.
